Homes are more than just bricks and mortar. When you buy or rent, you also get the land on which the property stands and any other buildings that are attached to the land with reasonable permanence. If you have an apartment or condo, there may well be a garage or other storage facilities offered, or you may have rights over common parts like the corridor outside your door. If you have a garden, your lawn, plants and shrubs are protected but only everyday household contents are covered as of right. If you have anything unusual, you must tell the insurance company about it and arrange separate cover.

Some policies also cover consequential losses so if you rent out part of your home or use part of it as an office for your own business, you may be able to recover lost rent or the cost of relocating your office if your home burns down.

You have to read the policy carefully to see exactly what perils are included. Some are limited to your own property, others include the possessions of relatives and friends while they are on your property. Most do not include the property belonging to your tenants. It is up to you to negotiate the cover that fits your needs.
